🇳🇨️ AIPANEMA 2025-2027
The AIPANEMA (Artificial Intelligence and Passive Acoustics for NEw Management Actions) project aims to monitor the soundscapes of 11 sites of New Caledonia during 2 years. These remote locations of the Coral Sea Natural Park are located around Chesterfield Islands, Walpole Island, Durand Reef, and on Ellet Seamount.
In addition to the usual visual monitoring, soundscape analysis will enable a standardized assessment of multiple compartments of their marine ecosystems:
- Cetacean and sea turtle populations: species present, periods of frequentation
- Coral Reefs: biological rhythms, responses to global disturbances, dynamics of key functions such as grazing by parrotfish, periods of high activity of emblematic species such as groupers, etc.
- Local anthropic pressures: intensity of noise pollution, possible illegal activities
This unprecedented information will enable us to develop innovative management actions, and thus optimize the conservation of these exceptional ecosystems, despite the growing pressures they undergo. Beyond the nature of these actions, an important added value of the project will be to define the optimal periods and duration for their implementation, precisions made possible thanks to the sharpness of the temporal information collected.
This project is made possible by close collaboration with the IRD in Nouméa as part of the MEGAFAUNE project and thanks to the authorization issued by Gouvernement de la Nouvelle-Calédonie. AIPANEMA is co-funded by the European Union and the SOCREDO in the contexte of the BestLife2030 program. The funding is administered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the final beneficiary are the Coral Reef Natural Park and the New Caledonia Government.
